Electric Scooters Under ₹50,000 in India: The emergence of electric scooters is gradually entering Indian daily life. A few years back, people could hardly afford to purchase an electric scooter as it cost nearly 1 lakh or more.

EVs were too expensive for many people. Now things are changing. The ownership of the electric scooter has now become relatively cheap with the unveiling of the Battery-as-a-Service concept.

Large producers like TVS Motor Company and Hero MotoCorp have begun retailing scooters in which the price of the battery is differentiated from the vehicle price. The new strategy means that the initial price of the scooter has been significantly decreased, which will enable the clients to take home an EV at less than 50,000 rupees. Users are no longer required to pay the whole battery price at once,  but get to pay a subscription fee or pay on a use basis.

Learning about the Battery-as-a-Service Model

Battery-as-a-Service model will enable the electric scooters to be more affordable to the common consumers. In the majority of electric vehicles, the battery itself will cost almost 40-50 percent of the total costs of the scooter. Removing the battery price to the original purchase will enable companies to lower the showroom price significantly.

Under this system, the customer is only charged for the purchase of the scooter body. The battery is offered on a subscription basis whereby one pays a small fee per month or some payment through use. The fact that the company works on the health and performance of the battery is one of the largest merits of this system. In case of problems pertaining to battery usage or battery life, maintenance or replacement is done by the manufacturer.

This system operates in a manner that is very similar to the monthly service subscription. It reduces the economic cost on the purchasers and simplifies the process of switching to electric mobility.

Hero Vida VX2 Go: An Electric Scooter of a Low Price

The electric company at Hero MotoCorp, Vida, has launched the Vida VX2 Go as a cheapest electric scooter in the market. Under the Battery-as-a-Service option, this scooter has an initial ex-showroom cost of approximately 44,990.

The scooter uses a 2.2 kWh removable battery pack, which can be charged easily even in most locations like charging a smartphone. The scooter can cover the range of 92 kilometers once fully charged, and this is sufficient to cover the city commute on a daily basis.

Vida VX2 Go has a maximum speed of approximately 70 kilometers per hour and has several modes of riding, including Eco and Ride. Under the BaaS plan, the cost of battery consumption in this scooter is about 1.25/ kilometer.

Besides performance, other useful features of the scooter are display of 4.3-inches LCD screen, bluetooth connection and large storage compartment of 33.2 liter. Such characteristics make it practical to use on the daily basis and at the same time affordability.

TVS Orbiter V1: Premium Technology at a Reduced entry price

TVS motor company has also ventured into the low-cost EV market with the TVS orbiter V1. Due to its competitive pricing within its Battery-as-a-Service model, the scooter has gained attention. It has an approximate ex-showroom price of 49, 999.

Within the BaaS model, customers have to pay about ₹862 in form of a monthly battery plan. A good thing about this plan is that TVS does not place any rigid distance restrictions on how far one can cover within a month.

Under this plan, the company also offers a warranty of battery to a maximum of five years or 70,000 kilometers. The battery used in the scooter is 1.8 kWh which has a range of approximately 86 kilometers when fully charged.

Technologically, the Orbiter V1 has a number of high-end options that include color LCD display or turn-by-turn navigation, being equipped with cruise control as well. These are common in more costly electric scooters and the Orbiter V1 is therefore an exception in the low-cost market.

Electric Mobility is going to be more accessible

With the launch of the Battery-as-a-Service model, the scooters with electric power have become significantly more available to the Indian consumers. Manufacturers are ensuring that the cost of switching to electric scooters is getting easier as they lower the cost of the purchase of the initial battery and reduce the cost of the battery purchase to a time-saving procedure.
